Scroll through to learn more about agroforestry and nature-positive coffee.
An agroforest is a planted or natural forest with agriculture embedded. A coffee agroforest is one in which coffee plants are grown.
By planting trees and bushes alongside existing coffee plants, the planted forest will, over time, closely resemble a natural forest that will attract and host a variety of insects and wildlife. This environment is far more generative than the existing coffee monocultures and excellent for producing quality coffee.
Slow is in the business of nature-positive coffee, which means working towards:
> Capturing more carbon in our coffee forests than is emitted in the rest of our production.
> Bringing back more biodiversity in our coffee forests by growing and preserving native plants and trees to attract and host insects and wildlife.
> Ensuring that local ecosystems are cleaner and healthier through natural processing and by banning harmful practices.
> Helping more people out of poverty by paying them a living income that is sustainable, fair, and equitable.
Through Friend-Ship and Slow’s partnership, we are helping to fund several initiatives to improve the lives of the farmers and biodiversity.
We are planting different species of fruit and native trees on the farms to improve biodiversity. Additionally, planting trees increases the canopy cover, which is beneficial in producing tastier coffee beans, while protecting the plants from climate change.
Suitable investments in processing equipment for the farmers, such as wet mills and drying tables, speed up the processing time and increase their income.
By assisting in setting up bee boxes and conducting training, we are empowering farmers to create an additional income stream from selling honey.
