FAMILY KHAMTAI
HOUAY WAY VILLAGE
BOLAVEN PLATEAU, LAOS

TOTAL HECTARES: 2.8
FARM ALTITUDE: 1135m
HOUSEHOLD SIZE: 8 PEOPLE

Mr. Khamtai and Mrs. Bua, their three children, and Mrs. Bua’s parents live in the remote village of Houay Way, in the Bolaven Plateau of Southern Laos.

Mr. Khamtai initially settled down in 1997 and has cultivated coffee for the past seven years together with Mrs. Bua. The small farm rests at an altitude of 1125 above sea level, where the soil is enriched by volcanic ash, surrounded by forest, and protected by trees.

Cultivating the farm is a team effort, where both Mr. Khamtai and Mrs. Bua work together. They get up in the morning to conduct various duties – such as cutting the grass, pruning the coffee branches, and applying natural fertilizers (e.g., dried coffee skins) when required. Then, when picking season, they both use great attention to detail to select only the red and ripe coffee cherries.

Mrs. Bua is known to be a fun-loving person who is a great dancer (and is known to show off her skills at parties) and loves a dash of local whiskey with beef soup, which is her favorite food. On the other hand, Mr. Khamtai and the children love football, and their favorite food is sunflower seeds, bamboo soup, and fried beef.
